Candice
"Zu" Walker was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1975. This rising artist
was born into an artistic family with her Mother, a seasoned artistic
doll maker, and other talented family members. Candice knew at a very
young age that art was her first love, painting and sketching at the age
of 10.
During her high school years, Candice earned a scholarship to attend Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA to study life drawing. At the age of 17 she held her first exhibition at the Christina Cultural Arts Center in Wilmington, DE. She then went on to College to earn her Bachelor's degree in Education while teaching art to children during her summer breaks. After graduating and beginning her teaching career, she felt an emptiness inside from abandoning her first love. She then received a degree in Computer Animation with studies in Graphic Design. She continued to teach but also indulged in Graphic Design freelancing and even started a plaster body sculpting business which received recognition in Delaware's Spark Magazine. Now that she has decided to dive back into painting again, she mainly likes to work with acrylic but has used various mediums including oil, charcoal, fabric and pastels. She describes her creations as vivid reflections of human experiences. Her figurative mixed style invokes an idea behind each painting. "I want my audience to be able to see themselves in one or more of my paintings and use it as a healing aid". She signs her name as Zu on her paintings, short for her adopted name at the age of 11, Zuwena (Swahili for good girl).
